Job Description

The Admissions Counselor will serve as a frontline representative of Mississippi Valley State University, advancing the Office of Admissions and Recruitment's vision of expanding access, strengthening engagement, and driving enrollment growth. A significant portion of this role involves extensive travel to high schools, community colleges, and college fairs within assigned territories, where the counselor will recruit, build relationships, and promote the value of MVSU. Counselors will communicate with students and families through phone, email, mail, and in-person interactions, ensuring timely and high-quality service. They will develop expertise in their assigned territory, leveraging knowledge of local demographics to strategically reach prospective populations. Responsibilities include tracking and reporting recruitment outcomes, providing guest feedback, and managing budget-related updates. Counselors will also collaborate with MVSU's expanding alumni network to build student pipelines, facilitate referrals, and incorporate alumni into information sessions, outreach events, and calling campaigns. In addition, they will support the daily functions of the office by assisting with campus visits, walk-in inquiries, phones, and applicant processing.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, preferably in higher education administration, communications, business, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively engage diverse student populations, families, and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to coordinate and execute recruitment events, travel schedules, and follow-up communications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, goal-driven environment.
  • Proficiency with technology and data-driven communication tools (e.g., CRM systems, Microsoft Office Suite, virtual meeting platforms).
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including evenings and weekends, as required by the recruitment cycle.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in admissions, higher education, student services, or related collegiate environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in college admissions, recruitment, enrollment management, or student affairs with proven success in meeting or exceeding enrollment goals.
  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems such as Slate, Banner, or similar platforms to manage student records and communication.
  • Demonstrated experience with event planning, public speaking, and engaging audiences in both small and large group settings.
  • Knowledge of regional, national, and/or international higher education trends impacting student recruitment and enrollment.
  • Experience cultivating relationships with alumni, community organizations, or external partners to expand recruitment pipelines.
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly in serving underrepresented and first-generation student populations.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to travel frequently, including driving long distances and occasional air travel, with extended periods of time spent standing, walking, and engaging with students at recruitment events.
  • Ability to lift, transport, and set up recruitment materials and displays weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as required by the recruitment cycle.
